The Nature of Early Drop of ¢¥ Sekaiichi ¢¥ Apple Fruit

Abstract
Characteristics of early fruit drop of ¢¥Sekaiichi¢¥ apples was investigated. Percent initial fruit set of ¢¥Sekaiichi¢¥ by open pollination was 20%, whereas ¢¥Fuji¢¥ and ¢¥Tsugaru¢¥ apple trees were 67% and 50%, respectively. Percent initial fruit sets of ¢¥Sekaiichi¢¥ apple trees by hand pollination during 0-5 days after anthesis were also lower than those of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ apple trees even at any pollination date. Especially, the percent fruit sets of ¢¥Fuji¢¥ apple trees pollinated at 3rd and 4th days of anthesis were 26% and 46% higher than those of ¢¥Sekaiichi¢¥ apple fruit trees. Early fruit drop of ¢¥Sekaiichi¢¥ apples after initiall fruit set initiated from 16 days after full bloom (AFB) and then continued for about 20 days. The most fruit drop (95%) occurred from 21 to 32 days AFB. The diameter of developing fruits during this peak period were 12.6-24.1§®, whereas those of growth-ceased fruits were 8.0-11.3§®. The fruits began to abscise at 8-11 days after the growth of fruits ceased.
